How much does a street light cost?
Introduction
Street lights play an important role in every city, town, and residential area. It illuminates the road at night, creating a safe nighttime environment for people, and helping to ensure that people can get out of their homes and drive safely at night. In fact, after the road is completed, the first thing to install is the street lights and some signs. Therefore, we recommend not to ignore the importance of street lights. LED lights street is so important that we can’t imagine life without them. When it comes to cost-effective street lights and their installation, I don’t think many people have a clear idea of street lights cost. However, there is no need to worry, as this article will walk through the list of street light costs you should be aware of. For a successful roadway lighting project, it is helpful to know these in advance, it will help your street lighting project planning and the use of funds.
Since street lighting has multiple applications including sidewalks, squares, sidewalks, and highways, We need to use different types of street lights and different LED street light wattages. The most commonly used street lamps are high-pressure sodium lamps, metal halide lamps, fluorescent lamps, halogen lamps, LED lamps, and LED solar street lamps. So when discussing the cost, we will also introduce the cost of other types of lamps other than LED street lamps, and their maintenance cost. So how much do street lights cost? What is the cost of a street light? A street light(not LEDs) will typically cost between $200 and 400 dollars(include the street light price and cost of post). Depending on where you live, installing a street light might cost up to $200-300. Next, we will introduce the costs of LED solution to you in detail through this article.
How much does it cost to replace street lights?
Before we consider the street lights cost, it is important to understand the cost of replacing street lights. If you already have street lights. You firstly need to determine how much you need to spend on disposing of them. Keep in mind that replacing and disposing of street lights can be very expensive. Below we have listed the cost of replacing street lights to give you an idea.
List and Price of replacing Street Lights = Bucket truck rental cost+ Salary of Minimum 2 Workers + Cost of new LED Street Light.
The bucket truck is generally leased at least one day every time, and its lease cost is shown on R&R Rentals. Therefore, if you replace more lamps at one time, the cost is correspondingly lower. On the contrary, if you replace one light fixture at a time, the cost will be very high.
- Bucket truck cost: About $500.00 per day
- Labor cost: $50.00 per hour (two workers)
- Others: gasoline, subsidy
- Street light cost: $100.00
So we have to pay about $1000.00 for bucket truck costs and labor costs. If we can replace 20 pieces, we will cost at least $50.00 for every failure street light. The above cost is just for reference and the costs don’t include the street light price, and the final cost actually depends on work efficiency and local wage level.
How much does it cost to Install street lights?
The cost of installing a street light depends on the type of light fixture. Below we introduce LED street lights, high-pressure sodium lamps, and solar street lights.
- If you install a 100W LED street light, the street light price is about $110.00.
- If you install high-pressure sodium or halogen lights, the cost of street lights is $60.00-$70.00
- If you install a solar street light, take the ZGSM integrated solar street light ZGSM-PV1005027, the cost is about $390.00
As to the cost of the lamp post, the estimated cost is $200.00 for common LED street light or $400.00 for solar street light.
In most cities, the cost of installation includes labor, bucket trucks, and a few other expenses. According to the previous section, we list the cost of labor and bucket truck as below. After looking at the list below, you must be wondering why the price of road lighting installation is so high. This is because the costs of labor and bucket trucks can be very high. Beyond that, the entire installation process can be time-consuming for most people. Moreover, if your project is a bridge or highway, you need to spend 20% more.
Type of street light | LED Street Light | HPS | Solar Street Light |
---|---|---|---|
Cost for lamp | $110.00 | $60.00-$70.00 | $390.00 |
Cost for lamp post | $200.00 | $200.00 | $400.00 |
Cost for labor | $50.00 | $50.00 | $50.00 |
Cost for bucket truck | $60.00 | $60.00 | $60.00 |
Cost for others | / | / | / |
Total | About $440.00 | About $380.00 | About $1000.00 |
As street lights are utilized in a variety of areas, including highways, underground parking lots, and residential backyards, the cost of a 100W LED street light varies from $40 to $170.
How much does it cost to run street lights?
The total operating cost of street lamps ZGSM believes can be divided into two parts: energy cost and maintenance cost. Energy cost is the amount of electricity paid to run a street light. Maintenance cost refers to the cost paid to maintain the street light. When there is a street light failure, we have to pay the cost of replacing the street light or the cost of replacing the LED driver and LED modules so that it can continue to operate. So, when you put it all together, you can see the cost of running a LED street light.
Energy costs
Taking LED street lights as an example, we use 100 watts LED street lights for a 1 kilometer long, two-lane road with a pole distance of 40 meters. And street lights are installed in the middle which means we have 25 lampposts. As checked, the average electricity cost is $0.32 kW/h. Refer to Electricity price statistics, So the running cost of streetlight running is (50x100x0.32)/1000 = $1.6/hour/km. When we consider the operating cost of one lamp for one year, the result is 1.2*0.32*365=$140.16. Another example, The average price in the USA is 10 cents per kilowatt-hour ($0.10/kWh), If 100w street lights are used for 12 hours a day. Consumption for 12 hours is (12 hours100 watt) = 1200 watt-hours = 1.2 kWh. So daily Electricity cost is (1.2 kWh$0.10) = $0.12.
PS: the power consumption for 12 hours is (12 hours * 100 watts) = 1200 watt hours = 1.2 kWh.
Take the high-voltage* street light as an example, we use a 250-watt HPS street light for a 1 kilometer long, two-lane road with a pole distance of 40 meters. The average electricity cost is $0.32 kW/h, and the street light operating cost is (50x250x0.32)/1000 = $4.0/hour/km. When we consider the operating cost of one lamp for one year, the result is 3*0.32*365=$350.40.
*it refers to the input voltage of street light, which is typically 100-240/277VAC. Another street light voltage refers to the output voltage of LED driver. In street light the main power supply produces an isolated fixed voltage typically 24 or 48V, low enough to fall within UL or EU (SELV) safety limits. Separated Extra Low Voltage (SELV) system is an extra low voltage electrical circuit that is electrically separated from other circuits that carry higher voltages, isolated from the earth and from the protective earth conductors of other circuits.
PS: the power consumption for 12 hours is (12 hours * 250 watts) = 3000 watt hours = 3.0 kWh.
For solar street lights, the power consumption and power costs are 0. However, its installation cost is also the best among these different street lights. For these 3 different street lights, we listed the running cost below.
Type of light | LED Street Light | HPS | Solar Street Light |
---|---|---|---|
Cost for installing lamp | About $440.00 | About $380.00 | About $1000.00 |
Electricity bill | $140.16 | $350.14 | $0 |
Saving compare to HPS | $210.00 | / | $350.14 |
Payback time | 2.1 years | / | 2.85 years |
In the above table, we can see that the payoff period is 2-3 years for street lights. This means after 2-3 years, the saved electricity bill is covering the costs of street light replacement. Now the energy prices are getting more and more expensive, so we think the trend is to replace traditional street lights with LED lamps or replace them with solar street lights. For solar street lights, if the quality is not good, it needs to be replaced in 3-5 years (the battery ages faster).
Maintenance cost
These costs include factors such as materials, time, labor, equipment, and others.
We have already introduced the cost of replacing a lamp at the beginning of the article. It is very high mainly due to labor and equipment. On the contrary, the cost of lamps and lanterns is relatively small. So for maintenance purposes, we still need this formula to help us to find the details regarding costs.
List and Price of replacing Street Lights = Bucket truck rental cost+ Salary of Minimum 2 Workers + Cost of new LED Street Light.
Replacing a street light on-site takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes depending on the proficiency of the worker. For a skilled electrician, we need $50 per hour of work. At the same time, we need a helper for $30.00 an hour. A bucket truck might cost $60.00/hour ($400.00 a day, 8 hours a day), whereas an LED power supply or LED module costs $20.00 to $30.00. Based on this amount, it is estimated that replacing a light fixture or repairing a light fixture will cost between $50.00 and $120.00. As you can see, the most of costs are bucket truck and labor costs. In addition, if 1-2 lamps are repaired at a time, the cost will even exceed $200.00 per lamp.
When we search on google, See KCMO.Gov. we will find the astonishing fact. In the city of Kansas, 6 million dollars are spent every year for monitoring and maintaining over 100,000 lights. This results in $60.00 being required for each light to continue working. That’s why this municipal finally decide to change these lights to LED. Because LEDs offer the lowest maintenance costs as compared to other outdoor lighting options such as HPS lamps.
How much does it cost to get high-cost-performance street lights?
Through the above information, you can clearly see the installation cost, electricity consumption, and maintenance cost of the lamps. ZGSM believes that the choice of cost-performance street lamps is important. For high cost-performance, we mainly need to consider light efficiency, lifetime, maintenance difficulty, and of course the price must also be considered. For the lifetime of the below three models, it’s almost the same. The K series has the largest lamp housing. And I believe its cooling is the best and it’s more aesthetically pleasing. For Rifle series, it has the highest light efficiency and tool-free opening. And Nova series is with the lowest price.
