Street lighting is the main component of urban lighting. Its lighting effect (brightness and illumination) and quality (uniformity and glare) are directly related to the city’s nighttime safety and quality of life. With the progress of LED technology in light efficiency, LED is increasingly used in road lighting due to its energy-saving characteristics. How can LED lamps achieve further energy saving and application? The answer is intelligent control. In the early years, we may have heard of Zigbee, LoRa, NB-IoT, etc., which are currently more mature and applied technologies. In recent years, Zhaga and D4i have proposed Zhaga-D4i, which not only has intelligent control but also requires data transmission. Most street lights of ZGSM are honored to have passed the Zhaga-D4i certification this year. Here, we will mainly introduce what Zhaga-D4i is, as well as the street lights certified by ZGSM through Zhaga-D4i and their applications.
What’s Zhaga-D4i?
Zhaga-D4i is a standard for smart lighting and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, developed by the Zhaga Alliance and the DALI Alliance. The standard aims to ensure mechanical and electrical interoperability and interchangeability between luminaires and control devices, and promote the deployment of smart connected lighting systems. Zhaga is actually an organization that defines the standards for the interfaces of key components of LED luminaires, which involve LED modules, lenses, LED drivers, sensors, etc. After the interfaces of these components are standardized, it can improve the mechanical and electrical compatibility and interoperability between products/components from different suppliers. Among them, the standardized interfaces involved in Zhaga-D4i are mainly Zhaga Book 18 and Zhaga Book 20. The former is for outdoor luminaires, namely Book 18-Smart interface between outdoor luminaires and sensing / communication modules. The latter is for indoor luminaires, namely Book 20-Smart interface between indoor luminaires and sensing / communication modules.
D4i is DALI for the IoT as some people say, while others say it is DALI for Intra-Luminaire. It was proposed by the DiiA organization. We are more familiar with DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) and DALI-2, which is a digital addressable lighting interface standard for smart lighting systems. It allows lighting equipment to communicate and control through digital signals, providing functions such as switching, dimming, and scene setting. D4i is an extension based on DALI. It is not just communication and control between lamps, but also focuses on intelligent communication and control between internal components of lamps (such as LED drivers, sensors, etc.). The D4i standard supports the collection and analysis of data such as lighting assets, energy, and diagnostics, which is a function that DALI-2 does not have. Through the D4i standard, sensors and communication modules can be easily integrated into LED lamps without the need for additional DALI lines. D4i defines a unified communication interface and data format, so that lamps, controllers and sensors produced by different manufacturers can be compatible with each other and realize interconnection between lamps.
So Zhaga-D4i is a lighting interface standard that combines the technologies of the Zhaga Alliance and the DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) Alliance to provide a standardized solution for data communication between smart LED lamps ( Please review videos of smart street light. ) and sensors/communication modules or controllers.

At the same time, the light source and LED power supply are placed independently, reducing the impact of heat dissipation on each other.
