ATEX certification is a mandatory certification for all equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres, including electrical (ATEX light, power supply, cable, etc) and non-electrical equipment, as well as protection systems.

What is the corresponding standard of ATEX in the United States and other countries?

ATEX EU is a mandatory certification for explosive atmospheres in Europe, NFPA 70 NEC is a mandatory certification in the United States, and IECEx is an international certification accepted by some other countries, including Europe. ATEX certification is only available in EU countries, while IECEx certification is accepted worldwide, and NFPA 70 NEC is only accepted in the United States, Mexico and a small number of countries in South America.

Is it ok for Class I equipment be used in environment which requires Class II? Zone 1 becomes Zone 0? And vice versa?

Accepted Answer

Class I equipment can be used in class II, but not the other way around. This applies to Zone systems—equipment suitable for Zone 0 can be used in Zone 1 and Zone 2, but equipment suitable Zone 1 or Zone 2 may not work in Zone 0.
