What’s the different levels of TLCI?

The TLCI is an index designed specifically for the broadcast and film industries to evaluate the consistency of lighting on camera color rendering. The TLCI values are more spread out into 5 levels

85-100, Errors are so small that a colorist would not consider correcting them.

75-85, A colorist would probably want to correct the color performance, but could easily get an acceptable result.

50-75, A colorist would certainly want to correct the errors, and could probably achieve an acceptable result, but it would take significant time to get there.

25-50, The color rendering is poor, and a good colorist would be needed to improve it, but the results would not be to broadcast standard.

0-25, The color rendering is bad, and a colorist would struggle for a long time to improve it, and even then the results may not be acceptable for broadcast.

Why is sports lighting important?

What’s luminance contrast in sports lighting?

The relationship between the brightness of an object and its immediate background is the luminance contrast. For better visibility, the contrast should be as high as possible. For example, the reflectivity of the tennis court surface and background should not exceed 30% to achieve a good contrast between the tennis ball (usually 70% reflectivity or higher) and its background. This factor is even more important when the game is televised. It is difficult for TV viewers to spot a fast-moving ball on a highly reflective surface, i.e., the court has a lower reflectivity surface/color and the ball has a higher reflectivity surface/color. For example, black and white produce a high luminance contrast, but using black on the background surface is undesirable. Therefore, they often use complementary colors to improve the contrast, such as yellow and blue, green and orange, etc.
